Naturally Learning...about the planets

So I thought every now and then I'd post about what this journey of ours into a more 'natural learning' actually looks like.
It's a journey, as is all our life, so it will continue to morph and change as time goes on I'm sure.
This is where we are right now.
In all honesty, it is really just another way of describing our life to you.
We recognise that there are learning opportunities in all that we do!
We learn right along side our children.
We try and provide suitable stimuli that will encourage them to explore new concepts and the world around them.
We listen when they ask questions.
We help them when they need it and interact constantly.
John Holt once said, "Learning is as natural as breathing".
This seems to be the case in our family!
Please let me show you as an example what took place yesterday at our house!

Last weekend, we went to some shops and Elijah (who just turned 8 last month) spotted these sytrofoam balls. He asked while we were in the shop if we could get some.

Me: What do you want these for mate?
Liji: We could paint them and make some planets.
Me (sidetracked): I'm not sure...um....
Liji: See there are 8 planets mum; Mercury Venus, Earth and Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune....Pluto is a dwarf planet now so we don't need that one. Could we get them please?
Me: Ok mate :)
Liji: Can we paint them today?
Me: Probably not today but maybe sometime during the week.

Skills Shown: demonstrating initiative, oral narration, factual recall, clear communication of an idea, ability to comprehend (that today was not a good day to do it..ie: no meltdown followed!)

A couple of days later, Liji asked if we could paint the balls. I asked him which colours he would use and he said he wasn't sure. I suggested getting out the solar system floor puzzle which he constructed immediately.

Skills Shown: communication, self-motivation, organisation, ability to follow instruction, taking the initiative to want to complete the project he'd thought of on the weekend, ability to reason + sequence along with hand-eye coordination, concentration + spatial awareness when completing the floor puzzle

I asked if he wanted to write down the planets and the colours they were on the puzzle and he thought that was a great idea so he got some paper and began to make a colour key.

Skills Shown: identification, notation, evaluation

All of the kids joined in and Liji told them which planets he wanted them to paint and in which colours.

Skills Shown: delegation, team work, co operation, leadership

There were a couple of times when there were disagreements about which colours the planets should be. Stass remembered seeing one of the planets pictured in a book as a different colour than Liji had said and noted down. We ended up getting out the DK Space book that we love along with a 'My First Space Wipe and Learn' book that I'd bought for the kids about a fortnight ago. We all voted on which colour we thought it should be based on what the two books plus the floor puzzle showed.
Skills Shown: conflict resolution, discussion, research, deliberation, concentration

Liji was trying to work out a way that he could paint the bit that his fingers had been holding. One of the other children suggested using a skewer and then to hold onto that while painting. Great idea!

Skills Shown: creative thinking, application of an idea, decision making, clear logic, problem solving

Once the planets had been painted, Ethi asked if he could do some hand prints on paper

You are never too old for handprinting!

The other kids decided that was a great idea and joined in too!

Skills Shown: Clearly presenting an idea, time management skills (as we were getting close to Zeeki waking and I said we needed to do a short activity which they did by choosing hand printing)

Such a fun way to end our painting time!

At the end of this, it was time to wash hands and again, another great learning opportunity presented itself...this time just as simple as being able to help Zippi to wash the paint off her hands. I demonstrated the idea and she copied.

Skills Shown: Imitation, Independence, Concentration

Once dry, Liji wanted to assemble the planets for display. I asked him if he had any ideas about how to hang them together. He decided to get a skewer and thread them on one at a time. When I pointed out that the one skewer may not hold them all, he said,
"That's ok! I'm going to thread the other planets onto another one and then let them join in the middle where both the pointy ends are!"

Skills Shown: forward-thinking, planning, decison making, design, problem solving, prediction, ability to construct, perseverance
Ta da!

As you can see, children learn all the time!
They gain skills that will help them both now and in the future through everyday activities.
They are motivated to learn!
We feel that part of our job is to give an opportunity to encourage moments like this (which of course we can all do whether we are 'homeschoolers' or not).

One of the most important lessons I am learning at the moment is to ask questions!
Instead of telling them what I think, I'm asking them more about "why do you think that happened?" or "what do you think will happen next?" and allowing them the opportunity to explore the possibilities, present ideas and contribute to discussions.

See, we are ALL learning!
More to come another time,
Love

We celebrated that He placed you within OUR family.
We are so thankful to Him for your life mate!

You had a lovely afternoon tea with heaps of goodies to eat as a treat...

You got your first birthday cake that was 'high' in additives ( as a SUPER special treat)...

and loved having a go at blowing out the sparkler candles...

you loved the new Texas shirt Sulley got you which she had sent off for all the way from Austin Texas!

then you loved trying on the Rabbitoh's (your current fave team) pj's Nau and Pupu gave you. You had such a good go at reading the cards from the Denic's, Aunty Dee and Aunty Meng...

you were chuffed with the new bike horn we gave you...

and enjoyed every single birthday cuddle you got!

you were very excited opening up Aunty Anth and Unlce Andrew's pressie all the way from Wales! (Thanks guys - you are the best - love you both!)

you rocked out more cuddles with Nan, Pop and Sulley...

and more still with Nau + Pupu...

and then finished off the night by putting together, with dad + ethi's help, the cool Toy Story lego that you were given...

turning 6 in pictures + birthday traditions....

Our birthday mornings always start out the same...kids pile onto our bed + we all say happy birthday to our birthday boy/girl + have big kisses + cuddles. The birthday person waits on the bed while the other kids leave the room with a parent + we walk into the room singing 'happy birthday to you...' with present (and camera) in hand. This time it was his first pair of roller blades + safety gear and a book by Max Lucado that he had chosen last time we visited Koorong...

reading of the birthday card... on their 1st birthday our kids get a big party. on their 5th they get to take 2 friends to a playland. the ones in between these we have a small family-extended family (as in grandparents + aunties) celebration. After their 5th birthday they get to choose one friend to take to a cafe + have a special treat just the birthday kid + their mate (and mum) lol :) Liji chose his other mate Elijah (although he is VERY clear Reb you'll be pleased to know- "I have 2 special Elijah's - Elijah C and Elijah Stephen". love it.) Anyway, they had hot chips + i packed a little 'safe' treats bag for them to snack on for the way there. They really enjoyed it. Elijah C gave him his specially made card + pressies there and they got to draw at the cafe as well...

"check out this one mum!"he says wearing his new 'birthday boy' badge. i bought a blue birthday boy and a pink birthday girl badge so that we this can be part of our birthday traditions from now on. He was really excited to wear it for the day...

then we went back home with his little mate + shared a safe cupcake + sang happy birthday to him there too with Stass + Ethi joining in. If our parents are there another birthday tradition here is that the kids play the harmonica (not in tune or anything but they give it a cracker of a blow!) with my dad. It was something he started with them when Stass was about one i think + they have continued it on for the kids as the years have gone by.

In the arvo yesterday we celebrated my beautiful sister in law, Dannii's, 30th birthday (it is her real birthday today - happy birthday dan!) We enjoyed a really lovely time with the families although poor little Zip was a little over being passed around for cuddles by all the aunties! lol! As if you could deprive them of their snuggles - they so rarely get to see our kids but little zippi isn't so much a people person at the moment i think! We had a really nice time altogether + my mum and dad came too. It was lovely especially to see Brett's bro Pete + Megan + the kids again. While we were there everyone sang a happy birthday to Liji boy and he was able to cut his 'safe' 6 cake i had baked for him + our kids to enjoy...

Our birthday boy or girl also gets to choose his/her fave meal for dinner (plus they get out of having to do their chores that day!) and most times they get to do sparklers at night on their birthday too....

Well they are some of the birthday traditions from our place. What about at yours? Anything special you can share that is a winner in your home? I'd love to hear!

5 things I am thankful for today:
1. Having the family round this morning + getting to hang out with my nieces + nephew a bit more :)
2. Enjoying a lovely time of fellowship this arv with the McPhails + the Colmans
3. Brett doing so much washing this weekend
4. How amazing the Lord is at doing miracles in our lives! He just does not cease to amaze me at what He is capable of doing in my life. Praise you my Lord!!!
5. Abby's new little baby Nehemiah being born safely last night. Praise you lord for new life :)

I did this layout 3 years ago today...

It reads...
'yep. in the morning you will be 3. I can't believe it. I've been so caught up sometimes making sure you grow up, that I've neglected to appreciate the fun things about you being 2....like how you use the vacuum cleaner cord as a microphone, how you dress up in Stass' princess dress + talk on your pretend phone. Anyway, sweet dreams on the last night you are 2. Love you Liji xxx'

Well on the eve of you turning 6 mate, I wanted to document how beautiful you are! You rae growing up to be a beautiful man of God with such a strong sense of justice + injustice. You have a little waver in your mouth right before you begin telling a lie and then you fess up straight away. You are getting even better at telling the truth straight away nowadays. Zip + you have a very special bond and she cracks up laughing outloud to you. Love that you are beginning to read so well - sounding out all the phonogram sounds and writing them out even all by yourself. You love playing on the trampoline, are really great a baseball on the wii, have beautifully neat bookwork and you love colouring in. You are super quick at putting together jigsaw puzzles + mate you have laugh out loud at jokes and clap your hands together so loudly when you think something is really hilarious! You are getting better at sharing although you have to sometimes be reminded about the best ways to handle a situation if it doesn't go the way you want. Mostly, your prayerful heart and the way you connect with Jesus is something that inspires both me and dad and we are just so excited to see what the Lord holds for you in your future.
Love you our little man :)
Happy last day to ever be 5!
Happy 6th birthday for tomorrow :)

Even through the difficult surprising times....

He is there. My God is faithful.

On Sunday, my mum + dad came up to church for a visit (they live abour an hour away and don't get to come to church very often). After a lovely fellowship lunch, Brett + i took the kids home since Zippi hadn't slept + was losing it a bit! We had just put the bag down, gone into the bedroom to wrap Zip when we heard an almighty crack followed by a blood curdling scream - it was Liji boy. He had apparently slipped on a blanket on the tiles and slid straight smack bang into the corner of the wooden rocking chair. He had an egg on the side of his head immediately and it was already bluish and there was a split across the top. He was alert but his eyes began rolling back a little as we tried to calm him and put ice on.

I drove past the church, picked up mum who was still there eating lunch (!) and then we went across to the hospital for him to be checked over. I was sure he'd be fine but with head injuries we always feel its better just to check it out.

After he was seen in Triage, he was getting very irritable and my boy who can go ALL DAY at the same energy intensity (VETY HIGH!!!!) was saying he wanted to sleep. The nurse and dr both ok'd that and said they would monitor him. The dr did some obs while he slept + basically said we could go home as soon as woke up, if he woke up fine.

Well he didn't. He woke up screaming, hallucinating, had super strength, didn't know me. I was standing in front of him and he was screaming, 'where's my mum?' other patients were coming to see if he was ok b/c the screaming was so violent. He was trying to say things but he was slurring all of his words. I could make out somethings and they were awful. The poor thing. My heart broke. Mum and I just began quietly but audibly calling on the name of Jesus over him. I asked my Jesus bring his peace to Liji. Mum and I recited scriptures over him and he slowly began calming after what seemed an eternity. That half an hour-hour of him screaming like that felt like 5 or 6 hours. The dr came and asked me, 'is he usually like this?' Ah no. No he's not!

So the dr got on the blower and an ambulance came and transported him and me down to Westmead Children's Hospital which is about an hour and half away from home. Brett followed with Zip in the van (which mum was able to take back home to drop off - had she not been there for church that morning, how would I have gotten the van home for Brett to bring Zip in?). God really went before us and prepared everything as smoothly as possible! Mum and dad took the other kids back to their house which was only about 20 mins from Westmead.

Liji slept all the way down in the ambulance. Didn't move except for when he was breathing really. The ambulance guys were SO lovely and compassionate. I was able to share with the ambulance driver about how one of our mate's lives had been transformed by Jesus. They said they see alot of messed up lives and see how the cycle often continues. I shared with them how she used to live and since coming to be in relationship with God, how different EVERYTHING is about her. The cycle is being changed in her family. She is getting ready to welcome her beautiful grandson into this world in the coming weeks and she said to me the other day, ' you know this baby is going to be so loved and in a home where God is number one, where there's worship music playing, where there is praying - it's so different!' Praise you Lord for changing lives and eternal destinies!

Well, Liji woke up at Westmead with a big stretch and a 'hi mum!' I was so relieved!!! I cried tears of joy that he was back to normal! Brett + Zip came and joined us. Lij had a CT scan and i stayed there till about 8 then went back to see the kids at mum + dad's. The kids were waiting up and were so happy to see me (they'd been secretly worried i think even though they were fine with mum and dad). We knelt down and prayed together giving thanks for Liji's recovery and upholding them as they were both still down at the hospital. Both Eth and Stass had conjunctivitis by then so we prayed for them too.

Zip and I slept for about an hour and then Brett called at 10.30pm saying the neurosurgeon had looked at the scans and EVERYTHING WAS FINE TO GO HOME!!! Wooohooo!!!! Zip, Stass + Eth stayed asleep while mum looked after them and me and dad went to pick up Brett + cracker.

Although he vomitted on the way back, there was no other real sign of the concussion. All day yesterday (monday) he was fine too! Back to his normal, beautiful, cheeky, quick-witted self!!!

I know from our own experiences, that things don't always turn out the ways we want them to, but I firmly believe that the Lord is God of all circumstances and that He WILL work ALL things for the good of those who love him and have been called according to his purposes like His word says. Trusting in Him is sometimes hard to do but He is completly trustworthy!

Praising our God who was with us THE WHOLE WAY!

In other news briefly, congratulations to my lovely friend Donna + her family who welcomed into their home their beautiful daughter Aurora Love yesterday morning. Praising God for her and that all went well!

5 things I am thankful to the Lord for:

1. Psalm 23; was a real encouragement to me this weekend. Even though i walk through the valley of the shadow of death, you are with me.
2. My father-in-law, sister-in-law, John + Garon who came and helped move so much soil yesterday. We had such a lovely time together afterwards and we just felt so blessed by them all.
3. The rotating composter that Penelope kindly gave us that Brett was able to pick up yesterday
4. That this sore throat has not gone into anything nasty
5. That Zip slept so well at mum and dad's on Sunday night.

More another time,
Love Lus x

Wish i had a decent title for this post....

But i don't.
So i'll just share the pics that I wanted to with you :)

Here's Liji dressing up as safari man taking photos around the backyard.... Zippi is quite an expressive little bubba...

and here she is giving a little smile to Brett (a wind smile although he won't hear a bar of that *wind* nonsense!

Yesterday my beautiful sister Dee arrived from Melbourne and the kids (and us) were thrilled...

and of course she was more than thrilled to hold her niece for the first time...

Mum and dad brought her up and we all celebrated mum's birthday together...

Mum and dad have their birthdays 2 weeks apart so we celebrated both of them while Dee was here with this *safe* cake I made. Zippi had her real 3 week growth spurt and did not much else other than feed and scream yesterday! So the most I could manage was the 9 minute microwave cake while Brett cooked the whole baked dinner for us all. Here's mum and dad (so cute) before blowing out their candles together...
Ethi just looking so gorgeous showing off one of his Thomas magnets that he's been enjoying playing with lately...

Dee took some snaps of me with Zipporah today...

And Dee finished off the night playing Dora 'Trouble Bubble' game with the kids (before 2 were sent to bed for mucking up unfortunately) but they did have a lovely time with her. She's taken a turn to sleep on a matress on the floor in each of their rooms so far. So sweet and the kids think it's awesome :) Dee and I went for breakfast today at our fave cafe with Zip, we also did the shopping with her, a doctor's appointment and then some op shopping too. Busy day!

* Oh Nat, I haven't been on the other computer much which has the email account - sorry mate, will try and look at it tomorrow :)
* Happy birthday for yesterday to my friend Lu - hope your day was lovely! Send my love to you mate.

5 things I am thankful to God for today:
1. Precious time hanging out with Dee
2. The time Brett has had off work
3. Getting some order back in the house where we can
4. The NIV dramatised Audio Bible that we have playing tonight while Zip sleeps
5. Our backyard

Love and blessings,
