Reading through the book of Amos today.
The message of this book from the Creator of the Universe, Yehovah Himself, was given to a shepherd from Tekoa to be delivered to His people called Israel. He only has one body, one people (Ephesians 4:4). He used a humble shepherd and he still uses the humble hearted.
Yah is pronouncing judgement upon Israel because of their stony hearts; they have the 'look' of 'doing what is right in His eyes' but he sees through it all. He knows their hearts and says that He will not turn back His wrath because "they have rejected the law (torah) of Yehovah (the LORD) and have not kept His decrees" (Amos 2:4).
He set out just guidelines for His people in His Torah. He desires the heart that will stand up for the oppressed of Israel; those who do not deprive the poor of justice. He is abhored by the those who "cheat with dishonest scales" (Amos 8:5) and those who "brag and boast about their freewill offerings" (Amos 4:5) He desires again and again to get Israel's attention - even through the challenges He sends upon them, "yet you have not returned to me" He says (Amos 4:8, 4:9, 4:10, 4:11).
It is His desire NOW and it ALWAYS has been that His people, who are called by His name, will turn from their wicked ways, repent and follow the loving instructions that He gave to us - His children. He tells us to "Seek good, not evil that you may live. Then Yehovah the Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts". We see these same words in Romans 12:9
After telling Israel that they will indeed be exiled, He also finishes by promising to restore them,
"I will bring back my exiled people Israel; they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them. They will plant vineyards and drink their wine; they will make gardens and eat their fruit. I will plant Israel in their own land, never again to be uprooted from the land I have given them", declares Yehovah your Elohim (the LORD your God)
